So Im getting a new PC (laptop) with Vista home Basic installed (yuck!)  and Im thinking it probably comes with a restore disk rather than the proper disk???

I was thinking of installing XP on another partition, but then of course I will lose access to the Vista partition -  I know there are ways of getting this back but they can be a bit complicated and annoying, so Im thinking if I then install Windows 7 RC will this find and restore access to both XP and Vista?

or at least make it easier with BCDedit or something similar?

I would just record the product keys for the OS's what came with the laptop somewhere safe and blow away everything on the disk including hidden recovery partitions and install the Windows 7 RC. Nice clean fresh install with no hidden partitions uselessly consuming space. Best way to avoid the bundled crapware most suppliers put in their installs.

Windows 7 RC has a feature called XP mode which runs XP in a virtual PC and it a pretty compelling reason to not need to dual boot.
