OK so I have a Nokia E75 phone and have set it up to get mail from my home email address. This works ok however I thought it would be much nicer if I could run a IMAP server on home server.
I installed mercury mail which worked OK as a IMAP server internally and meant that I could setup each desktop that accesses the our mail to access it using IMAP however when it came to accessing it though the firewall it is somewhat limited and I have concerns as it is not being developed any more.

So what I am after is a cheap/free IMAP mail server that is not overly complex but will work though a firewall so that the E75 can get at it.

Any suggestions to look at?

What was the problem with your firewall? Was it the router firewall or the WHS firewall?

Any IMAP server will require at least the IMAP port to be forwarded from the Internet to your WHS IP - ths is not something unique to one program or another. Also you will need to open the port on your WHS if you are running the Windows Firewall...

The problem was more to do with the mercury mail server software. It did not allow for configuration of IMAP over ssl.
It really just had too many alarm bells ringing in my head as far as security went for a email server facing outward to the internet. The last update was in 2007.

Just found hMailServer so far does not look too bad. Anyone had a play?

hMailServer is excellent for small installations. Havent touched it for years though.

Whats wrong with your current email provider?

They don't do IMAP. Well they will if we switch to a clearnet address but I dont want to do that. Also even then they give a massive 10 meg of mail storage :-O

Why not just use gmail?

I have a gmail account too but the email address we have has been ours for 7+ years and I want to keep using it.

I will give hMailServer a look as it does seem to tick all the right boxes without being to complex to use.

Well just set it up to forward to a gmail account or setup a gmail account to collect mail from that email addresses pop server.

gmail can collect your email from your preferred email address, and can send the reply from that address as well.

Thanks for the suggestions all. After having a play with hMailServer and then gmail I came to the conclusion that gmail was by far the easiest and best way to get what I wanted.

So far working great.
