I have to change the security ownership of numerous XP objects on an external harddrive in vista.  Just wondering if there was an efficient way of doing this.

The reason I need to do this is because when I try to transfer the files from the ext drive to the vista computer I get the message:

Destination folder access denied
You need permission to perform this action

Try Again Cancel

In Vista.

Cloning is not an option for me.

maybe plug the disk back into XP and add the "everyone" and "guest" users to the drive. or maybe vista's UAC is getting in the way? if you format your external drives as FAT32 instead of NTFS then you wont have any permissions set at all.

Basically take ownership of the root folder, then add yourself to the permissions

right click on the root folder, security tab, owner, change the ownership to your local pcs administrator level account, click replace owner on subcontainer and objects

after its done all that, go into permissions tab, add yourself with full control, click replace all inheriting exisiting permissions, click ok,

If you just want the files from the user profile on the xp pc, just take ownership of that profile (quicker than doing the whole pc). Or use linux, no more windows permission problems.

Usually, vista will do this itself. If you try and open the user profile (under Docs and Settings), a UAC prompt will come up telling you you need to take ownership. If you click OK, vista will change the ownership of the folder. Can take quite a while if there is a lot of data. You just have to wait for the green bar to go al the way across in the menu bar up top.

Open a cmd with admin rights, and type the command:

Where X: is the drive letter.

If it doesn't work, you may have to follow it up with ICACLS:

ICACLS X:\ /grant Username:F /T /C
