I have two laptops here running Windows XP SP3. After all Windows Updates are installed every time I reboot these laptops there's an Explorer window that opens directly on "c:\program files\Microsoft" folder.

Very irritating - and it's happening in two laptops, one a fresh OS install I just finished.

Any ideas?

Can you give the full key name? I can delete using the registry editor - or msconfig should show it anyway (nothing there).

Found the culprit: Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a beta. I will log a fault.

Also here on Connect. It seems it only happens if you have Windows Live and Security Essentials on the same box...

Apart from the bug you found I'm loving Security Essentials, first the lightweight small installer and teeny tiny basic interface... and as a IT Pro I can't go past that price FREE. Beats managing hundreds of Antivirus subscriptions each year.

It's a very good product actually. And it's still beta.
