You probably want to continue using Avast or Avira until this proves to have a better detection rate than OneCare imo.

MS OneCare was awful.

Microsoft Essentials is based on the same engine as Microsoft Forefront, which is their enterprise end point security solution. It's much better than MS One Care - they don't share anything in common - and it's been tested by some AV certification labs already.

Microsoft Security Essentials engine is actually doing pretty bloody well

Microsoft's Free AV Looks Good in New Test Results
Security Essentials did a good job at blocking malware in new performance tests from AV-Test.org.
