Something interesting here: the ethernet adapter in my small notebook seems dead - no LEDs when I plug an ethernet cable - tried three different cables, directly to a router and through a switch.

I tried a USB/Ethernet adapter too - but same results.

However, if I try a live Ubuntu CD the USB/Ethernet adapter works, while the onboard ethernet adapter is still dead...

Any ideas? I would understand the onboard adapter not working, but not the USB adapter?

Have you had a look to see if the device is showing in device manager?

Yes, the device is showing, and showing as working - but when I insert the ethernet cable no LED comes up, and the status doesn't change to cable connected.

Latest drivers loaded, all in order.

Very strange. I wonder if Windows 7 is not monitoring status changes on these devices.

They have not been turned off to save power? If on battery they will turn off.

I have found my dell at work is nasty in that regard. If I put it on battery then the nic just will not turn on even switching it on via the dell desktop software does not work.

Sounds like an adapter problem. If you haven't already a reboot of Windows and disable/enable of adapter might be worth a try.

Ethernet and wi-fi are one of the weaker areas of Windows 7 to me which seems bizarre as it's not new technology is it?

It also seems poor that there is not automatic management options of the two e.g when ethernet is plugged in wi-fi becomes disabled and re-eanbled when it's unplugged or have I missed something?

I also had issues with the NIC powering off when moving my netbook in standby mode from a Wifi to wired network; had to either restart or manually instigate 'add new hardware' in device manager.

Hmmm. Nope. Tried Disable/Reboot/Enable, Uninstall/Install, changed all Power Management options to not allow OS to stop the devices, but nothing there. I would say it's a board fault...

As I said in my original post, I tried three different cables, and tried using a USB/ethernet adapter - which works ok under Ubuntu Linux, but won't work on Windows 7 either.
