Hiya there! Didnt know where was the best forum to place this thread so feel free to move it -

Am concerned about a serious issue?
- copied a picture (desktop snipe tool file) on my laptop.
- plug usb thingy into ps3 to view it
- when i reinserted the usb thingy into laptop (a week later - i dont remember plugging it into anywhere else?) the beaut AVG9 found a virus!
- myeclass.jpeg.dll.vbs

how is that possible! is my ps3 infected? i dont surf (perhaps "trialled" the browser on 5 occassions on sites like metacafe, youtube, soccernet, stuff, geekzone - cant remember any dodgy sites)

It certainly wouldn't be impossible but extremely unlikely for your PS3 to be infected by a virus.

If it was from your PS3 browser, the process of saving stuff to the hard drive from the browser is very prominent so unless you have been saving files randomly that pop up and then copy them to the memory card (I'm not sure if you can save directly from the browser to the memory card without going via the copy utility on the PS3).

As Sophos (http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/viruses-and-spyware/vbsautorunxk.html) indicates it spreads itself via removable media on a windows machine, it's almost 100% certainly been contracted from an infected windows system.

Have you thoroughly checked the actual laptop and other machines that you could even remotely have plugged them into?

ok thanks. all (my 2) machines have avg9 with external drive scanners. they've never reported this virus before. auto machine scan runs weekly. so perhaps it appears to be found now because avg has the definitions for it today and it didnt have the definition last week. very puzzling :)

i have also plugged the thing into multiple work computers many many times (but then again avg9 never complained until today). work computers have antivirus protection (but i cant comment more on that). this is the most likely source perhaps

but anyway, ps3 is separate from everything else so who cares if a virus wants to try to infect my collection of blurays! haha (the main reason for the ps3 was coz it was the cheapest bluray player at that time)

just that i found this interesting - and as you rightly pointed out may have nothing to do with the ps3 at all.

Could be a false positive, try uploading the file to http://www.virustotal.com/

It's a website where you can upload a file and they scan it with just about every anti virus program so you can see which ones detected it as a virus and which didn't.

Here's an example

I keep a fairly close eye on the possibility of viruses on the PS3 and so far none have been reported. Given that the virus you mention appears to be a Windows virus it is highly unlikely that you got it from the PS3.

the other point is that it would be for the windows OS not for what the PS3 is running, there is no way it could be infected by it :)
