Hey,

Anybody got a link, or any info, on the best way to go about moving data from a WHS box to a new box?
It would be totally different hardware and also want to start with a fresh install of WHS.

Currently have WHS installed on a 160GB SATA, which will not be used in the new box, and two 1TB SATAs for the data, with some folders set to duplicate.
There is also a 400GB SATA for MediaPortal Recorded TV but this is not part of the WHS storage pool.
I want to use the two 1TBs and the 400GB in the new box.
If I need to backup everything to another drive first I can get a 1TB USB drive as I have been meaning to buy one for a while now, for backups.

I want to use one of the 1TB HDDs as the main drive to install WHS on but if it would be easier to get another 1TB HDD and install on that and then just add the other drives to the storage pool, without losing any data, then I will do that.

Thanks.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Move the drives over and put in the new drive you want to use for the system. Then when you boot off the install DVD select recovery. It will then read the drive info in and keep the data. You will still need to resetup your users and any other software that you had setup before.

What happens with stuff on the other drive?  How does that get across?

if you can get a new 1TB drive and make absolutely sure it is the boot drive then a recovery will work.

If you want a clean install the best bet would be to backup to the 1TB external usb drive and copy the data back when the server is rebuilt fresh.

If you have any issues the drives can be removed and put into other computers and the data is normally hidden but can be found in x:\de\shares. Backup data cannot be moved to a new machine.
