Hi Guys, does anyone know if AVG Free is compatible with windows 7? I'm using a Compaq presario CQ61 and every time I try to download it I get the error code 0xe001c008, however when I download the trial version it works fine. I have Googled the problem but have had no luck

Forget AVG and get the Microsoft Security Essentials.
I've found it to be a lot better than AVG and also Avast.

dont use AVG its rubish. i have used AVAST 5 on windows 7 works no problems. you could try that as a free option

+1 AVG has become bloatware and will bog down your PC, MSE has a small footprint and works fine and it's still free.

If you want a truly great AV, pay the $50 and buy Kaspersky AV (Not internet security).

AVG 9.xx works well on win 7, but for no particularly good reason I have been suspicious of MS security stuff.
How much better than AVG is it? Got any comparison table links?
All keen to try new stuff

Have been working with kas for the last 6 and half years with several businesses and home users (approx 120 pc's), only ever had 1 virus and thats because she let the subscription lapse and wasnt up to date.

Is Microsoft Security Essentials unobtrusive? Has anyone got it (or any other similar product) installed on their HTPC? Mine is constantly connected to the net and I use it for surfing so wouldn't mind having something like this on it as long as it won't get in the way at all (Im about to install win 7 on it)

I keep Windows up to date, I don't do warez, I don't run document macros (unless I've written them).

So, I don't run a virus checker at all, and I've yet to be convinced that I need to.

@Asmodeus I run Security Essentials on my personal HTPC currently and so far it has been very unobtrusive. It also seems to put minimal load on CPU, etc compared with some other home anti-virus/anti-spyware products I have tried.

MSE is very unobtrusive, it only notifies you if it identifies a threat. It does daily updates etc in the background. It is also very easy on your system resources, it won't slow your computer down to a crawl like some AV products.

As a side note, my father recently asked me to clean up his PC (an old one he had from a company he used to work for), because he was getting messages about his AV being out of date. He was running two virus scanners at the same time, an expired version of McAfee enterprise, and an old version of AVG. His system was absolutely crawling.
