HP announced some time ago that they where bringing their mediasmart home server line to NZ, yet nothing has appeared yet.

I made some calls to HP to find out if they are avliable here/eta/pricing etc. Without much suprise HP was completely unhelpful and didnt have much of a idea of what I was talking about. Called EMPR (HP Master Parts Reseller) and spoke to a guy in their server team who said HP has no stock in the country and there is nothing coming in/on order as such, He did however mention they are readily avaliable in AUS, They do weekly shipments out of AUS and said he would look into bringing one over for me. So im now anctiously waiting for a call back with a price (EX490 model)

If they are able to source them, I will post the shipping ETA's and Pricing on here.

Thou begs to wonder if HP is ever going to officaly release them over here?!

I found the same frustrating issue, that HP have not released in NZ. I ended up buying from bhphotovideo.com in New York. This is the only company in the US I have found that will sell direct and ship to NZ. It arrived in a week and was a bit cheaper than buying from Oz.

Although the main reason for not buying from Oz is that HP had not released the EX495 over there at the time.

Thanks for that, dont know why i didnt think of trying them, I have purcashed a bit of gear off them in the past, Just had a look now and as you said its going to be far cheaper to buy one from the US than getting one from AUS, espically with the poor AUS exchange rate at the moment. almost $150NZ more expensive to get from AUS.

The HP NZ MediaSmart page links to HP Smart Office Solutions resellers. Have you tried contacting any of them to see if they know more?

Listed, but no stock, also still cheaper to buy via US.

Harvey Norman have had these in stock for at least a few weeks. I'd looked at them in the past and they had stock on display on Saturday when I was in there.

Very nice unit however I'm not sure it's worth the extra money over the Acer, from memory they were selling them for $1099

Interesting HP playing dumb, because Microsoft has just posted information about their Tech.Ed 2010 event and this year's special offer seems to be a HP MediaSmart Server...

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Saw from Harvey Norman's latest mailer, it is $1099 for EX490 (Celeron 2.2GHz 64bit 2GB 1TB; EX495 is Pentium Dual Core 2.5GHz 64bit 2GB, 1.5TB)

Depends on how you like it, HP has Time Machine support, HP Video Convert to convert from any video files across your library including unprotected DVD to MPEG4 h.264 (or any liking) for media streaming.

I wonder does Harvey Norman has EX495 though; in fact, would there be much performance difference between Celeron 2.2GHz and Pentium Dual Core 2.5Ghz?

My other curiousity is, wonder if I could make use one of USB 2.0 port as second ethernet connection using USB-Ethernet, then effectively conver WHS as router? (Any idea WHS users??)

As mentioned above they are available through Harvey Norman @ $1090, I ended up getting a EX490 through ascent.co.nz @ $941.06. (not listed on their site yet but they were able to source one for me via email) Which I felt is a pretty good price when comparing to harvey norman and they were also cheaper than acquire.co.nz

I bought a HP X510 last year from one of our suppliers, had to wait a week or so for HP to ship it from Singapore. At the time cost around $1100 NZD.
