I use the Windows XP backup utility.  However tonight when I tried to run it I got right to the end of the set up process where the "backup progress" box appears and nothing more happens.  The utility seems to freeze, if you open the task manager it shows the backup utility as running.  When you click on "end task" a box appears telling you that the progam isn't responding.

I have a new external hard drive which I am trying to use for the back up however I have tried using other medium that I have used previously with no better results.

Does anyone have any idea what my problem is?  I've done some google searches both on this site and globally but haven't found anything that helps.

Thanks.

If it appears to still be running in tskmgr its likely it is. There must be something its doing right at the end of backup thats just taking a while. How long have you left it to see if it completes?

I did give it plenty of time to respond and I tried an experiment just backing up one small folder and left it for nearly 30 minutes.

The status bar shows "preparing to back up using shadow copy" and that's as far as it goes.

You cannot use the cancel button or close it down using the Red X button.  When you go to task manager it looks ok until you choose "End Task" then you get the box which tells you that the program isn't responding.

It's certainly not responding as it has in the past.  While it can take some time to do a big back up you still see the progress as a percentage done and time to run, none of this is happening now.

Any other ideas?  :)

Thanks
