heya as you read from the title that my sound has gone. All I did was switch on my computer and then it just went away from my desktop. I go into Control panel and then have a look at the sound properties and then click on audio and then I press Volume and then it says Windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe, use Add/Remove programs control panel to instal. My question is, where abouts in control panel do I do it from and where would it be installed from?

Use system restore and go back to your last good configuration.
What programs have you installed or de-installed recently?
Are your antivirus and antispyware up to date?

Tony is correct though you will either have to do a system restore (if XP) or reinstall the sound card software\driver

Sndvol32.exe is probably corrupted.

If you have the original XP disks you can reinstall by going to the CD
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

You will probably have the XP install image on your hard drive - look for a folder called c:\i386 or alternatively grab the file off another XP PC.

I tried system restore and that didn't work.

I found the i386 folder but it comes up with is security catalogue. I don't know what to do after that

Can you explore the i386 folder? I checked my laptop and I can find Sndvol32.ex_ in the i386 folder.

there was only one file in that folder which was OEMBIOS and I clicked it and all the following content were in there:
Version
Subject Usage
List Identifier
Effective date
Subject algorithm
a couple of lines are in numbers which are too long to put
Thumbprint algorithm
Thumbprint

Are the contents of the folder hidden?
tools > folder options > View > hidden files and folders
set this to 'show hidden files and folders'

My i386 folder is 500MB in size. What is the size of youe i386 folder?

I think your only option now (that I can think of) is to get the program off another XP PC. Do you have a work or friends PC that you can copy it off?
