After internet explorer had crashed on me for about the 100th time I decided to download mozilla firefox. We use vista and mf seems to be working fine so far. One thing though if I click an email address on a webpage it would usually open in ms Outlook, it is not doing this and instead is trying to access web based gmail. How can I get mf to open emails etc directly into Outlook? I have made sure outlook is the default but must be missing something here... Also how can I get it to automatically log me into certain sites that I visit regularly? Thanks.

Click Start | Default Programs...

Most of Internet Explorer crashes are caused by third party add-ons. Things like toolbars, accellerators (incl Skype, Google, etc). You can start Internet Explorer without add-ons and see if it helps.

From the FF Tools menu, select Options then go to the Applications "tab" - there is a whole list of associated apps, and make sure "mailto" it set to MS Outlook - would have thought it would pick that up as "default" - this is how you have your "Set program access and defaults"? I also use Mozilla's mail client (T-Bird) which is "default" and am pretty sure FF just used it on its "default" status.

As for accessing sites, if you mean the equivalent of "Favourites" then FF calls them Bokmarks; if you mean saving userid/passwords etc then will depend to an extent on how the site authenticates you - you have the option for FF to "remember" such security details; if cookies are used these can be enabled/disabled at a site level. Much more sensible default and granular security (IMHO) than IE Innocent

Thanks, i'm over internet explorer! it wouldn't work for a whole day recently!

soleil24 i've checked the ff settings and the default is outlook. there was an option at the bottom saying ok for yahoo mail etc which i have removed but it still does not open up in outlook when i click on an email address. any ideas?

ff does save my passwords but i have to log myself in each time, this was not the case with ie.

assuming you are talking FF settings (not Win default apps etc), so:

FF Tools > Options

Click "Applications" tab and go to the "mailto" line - click to highlight it and you should see a drop-down list of apps you can choose to "associate" with the "mailto" function - choose Outlook (if it's not in the list, choose "other" and worst case, go find the executable for Outlook using the "brows" button)

IIRC When you first visit a site requiring login/password from FF you see a pop-up bar at the top asking if you want FF to remember security settings - answer "yes" and the login/password will be stored - you can see what passwords for what sites you have stored from within the Tools/Options menu at "Security" where you cna also check "remember passords for sites" *and* even choose exceptions if you want.

If a site uses cookies and "accept cookies" = off then pretty sure you will get a notifcation asking if you want to switch > on

Does that help any?

Have you installed the Google Toolbar? It will default to using Gmail if you've installed it and told it to.

either:

To uninstall from the Toolbar

  1. Click the down arrow next to the Toolbar's wrench wrench icon.

  2. Select Uninstall from the drop-down menu.

  3. Click Uninstall.

To uninstall from the Firefox Add-ons window

  1. Click the Firefox Tools menu.

  2. Select Add-ons.

  3. Select Extensions at the top of the window.

  4. Select Google Toolbar for Firefox.

  5. Click Uninstall.

(from Google> "uninstall Google toolbar" ;-)

Or just click Google Toolbar - options - then untick "Use Gmail for MailTo: links"

google toolbar uninstalled and it works as it should now with outlook, thanks everyone. now i just need to figure out the password thing. if i take geekzone as an example, i have it set to auto login but if i close mf and reopen it i have to login each time. it remembers my password, but with ie i did not have to log in each time. i'll have to find my password settings! thanks.

Then when you have that all sorted out you'll need a coupla things (addons FF call em) to make your browsing experience a lot better than the IE crud

1: No script   Stops alot of scrips running in the back ground of the page easy to configure

2: Ad Block   This really works NO bloody ads

3: Flash Block  block those horrid flash ads

4:Ghostery keeps Ad trackers away

5: and to round the collection Beef Taco  yes this is an Addon keeps your privacy

All Agree or have others to add???

DeadlyNZ:

2: Ad Block   This really works NO bloody ads

No "bloody" ads, and no revenues for sites that rely on ads to generate income to keep the site running, like Geekzone for example. It costs a lot of money to keep a large site running, and blocking ads hurts the sites you visit, unless you make an effort and whitelist the site to show its ads.

And by blocking all ads without distinction, how do you know? Also some websites won't run those types of ads at all, so fair to say blocking by default hurts more than

1.blocking offending sites only or
2.never visiting the offending site again
