Hi there i have multiple PC's laptops and desktops running windows 7 and i have some files and folders i need access to on them from my main laptop

i am wondering if it is possible to access them from my laptop by going to the network and clicking on the pc in there but also so that you need a password to access them

For example there is a folder called 'test' on a desktop called 'testdesktop' that is wired to my main router

My laptop which is called 'mylaptop' which is wirelessly connected to my main router

i want to be able to share the folder 'test' on the pc 'testdesktop' so that i can access it from 'mylaptop'
i want to put a username and password on the folder 'test' so that only i can access it and not anyone else

you could try use permisions

basic guide

not sure if that is going to help, not exactly for windows 7 but the general principle is the same

If all the computers are just in a WORKGROUP then, if you create the same username and password on all the computers, and this user has Administrative rights, then pass-thru authentication will mean you can access all the files and shares on those computers. To NOT allow pass-thru authentication you would need different usernames passowrds on each computer, does that make sense, then to password protect folders, you would need to know the username and password on the remote computer. This would be in the form Username:Computername\username
password:Password

On Windows 7 this would need to be NOT the Administrator user.

Hi Tiger not sure if you've sorted this out yet but basically what you'll need to do is have multiple administrators on the computers and have a password on your one. Then right click on your desktop folder you want to share and click the security tab. Click edit to change the permissions and remove all the other administrator names except the one you want access for.
