I have the 8gb SSD model HP Mini 1000 and have managed to install Win 7 but Drive C is full with the OS.  It looks like changing the drive is a major or at least very expensive so I am wondering if I can use the SD slot as the primary boot drive and install Win7 onto a [say] 16gb card?  The machine is primarily used as a nav station on a launch but has a vodem for Internet to get weather reports, email etc. on the go.  If this is possible and anyone has a tutorial, I'd be very grateful please.

I hate to say it but have you even tried Google? When netbooks were first released there was an influx of howto guides on howto install Windows without a optical drive, including guides on how to install to SD card. The first ASUS netbooks only had small SSD's like your HP Mini.

Would pay to double check the BIOS to ensure the laptop can boot from SD.
