hi there
i have a hotswappable bay and when i boot into windows , with a drive already in there, it appears fine.
however once the drive is replaced with another, the only way for me to see the drive is by rebooting windows.

im running windows 7 64bit and i have an asus m4a79xtd evo motherboard

im wondering is this what im after???

once you have swaped the drive try going into device manager and refreshing devices see if that helps post back with your findings

I assume you're using SATA drives and not IDE?

You need AHCI for hotswap, most BIOS default to IDE emulation for compatibility reasons.

Yea AHCI is recommended but you can make sure when you reinsert the the hdd that is it enabled in the device manager. You might have to enable the disk under disk Management in the Computer Management admin tools. type "Computer Management" in the windows start menu search and you should see it then. I think its storage tab then disk Management on the left column. (EDIT) oh i miss a comment above but ive done it like that before for when i had to with my old Xbox hdd so I could copy a game save so i could mod it :D

It's not something I can help you wish, I suggest you read your motherboard manual. The option will be there, typically called SATA type or something similar.

It's got nothing to do with disk management. There is nothing you want or need to touch in there. You need to change the setting in your BIOS.

I'll warn you that if you don't understand what you are doing with any of this stuff you risk trashing the data on your drive.

i think it will conflict with my raid 0 array, so i have decided to leave it and just reboot windows to access the disk again. both the options are NOT on ide, instead they are on raid. i can swap it to ahci and all is sweet, but id rather not destroy my raid.

thanks for your time. hopefully this helps/saves someone one day :D

This may be helpful if you decide to implement ACHI later on.
