hi

New programs on my compaq nx9040 notebook will not install. The biggest example is nortons 2006, when the cd is placed into my laptop it runs and then you click install nortons 2006 and nothing happens. The cd drive is fine according to a health check on the HP website and all other types of cds play. The cd is also fine as it is a three pack and worked on my parents computer. Also programs such as yahoo messenger downloaded from the internet the install file will not even open to commece installation. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem if it is indeed a software problem would be greatly appreciated.

It could be a lot of things, just a sample list:

- spyware or virus (would be hard to remove since you can't install anything, unless you can run a cleaner from a CD, but there are some online cleaners, from Trendmicro for example)
- Installer Service not started (look at Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services)
- User does not have Admin rights
- Disk full (double-click My Computer on the desktop, right-click your C: drive and select Properties. Then Tools and Cleanup).

Hi
It is to much work if you think to reinstall the windows.
But your problem is a virus which blocks the windows to install any software.
If you are thinking just to repair the windows installation this will not work, I tried it :).
In your case where you can't install anything there are 3 options.
1. Try to boot under Safe mode and install some basic antivirus software.
2. Take your hard drive out , put it in external 2,5" HDD case and scan it with a clear machine.
3. make a back up of you important files somehow, reformat the hard drive and install Win XP
make sure that you have all install disks before that because this is not a joke :). There is a big
chance that you will have some problems. The first thing after the reinstallation is SP2 and Antivirus.
Good luck
