This version of office has everything I need for two PC's at work and my home machine.

"Comes with disc and product key. For use on 3 PCs in 1 household"

^Does that mean it ties activation to an IP address or something? Just want to make sure I can use it in more than one location.

For a start not sure how using it on "two work PC's" qualifies as the requirements for student edition.

Anyway the license is tied to each machine, nothing todo with IP addresses.

The terms will say it is meant for 3 home computers in the one house which are used for personal use only.

But they won't be able to stop you installing it at different locations as far as i know.

We're not talking a vast corporate entity here. It's just that I don't need the extra features of the business editions (Outlook etc.), so I'd rather not pay for them...

Well it's a breach of License to use the Home version at work but Not "Illegal" as far as I know.

Like previously said, The activation is done via pc, nothing to do with Ip's. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to use your laptop away from home.

Don't get the Home and Student version, which is available to anyone to purchase for non-commercial household use, confused with Academic licensing. They are completely different animals.

Am I a complete idiot for never even considering that there might be a free alternative to Microsoft Office? :D

I might well start using it - for home at least.

Has anyone encountered any major flaws in Open Office?

Speech recognition with Open Office looks iffy... that could be a deal breaker.
