Problems with windows update options and behaviour.

In XP, I think updates notified with a tray icon (depending on update settings) when updates were available for download, and when updates had been downloaded and were ready to install.

In Vista (x86 ult) I hardly ever see a tray notification for updates. Only sometimes.

Usually I see only the 'install updates and shutdown' overlay on the start menu.

I'm currently set to 'download but let me choose whether to install', my preferred option is 'check but let me choose when etc'.

The 'Hide inactive icons' taskbar setting is disabled.

No idea why I'm not getting the tray notification.

The usual update cycle is second Tuesday of the month (Wednesday NZ time). There are some updates outside this cycle, but not many.

Looks like it may have been a software removal tool update out of cycle.

After a bit more experimentation it turns out the 'install updates' overlay appears on the task bar when updates are available - for all users, but - the tray icon does not appear for standard users unless 'allow all users to install updates on this computer' is selected in the windows update settings.

Hmm. Not exactly consistent, but never mind.

After making the change a logoff/logon (or a check for updates) is needed before the icon appears.
