So yesterday, after having dinner (Casserole...yum), I started up my laptop as normal, but I got this freaking annoying message;

Quote:

Windows Activiation
An un-authorized change was made to windows. Windows has discovered a change that will result in limited functionality. Use the link below to fine out how to fix windows.

So I followed that link, which took me to a Windows validation page, this 'validation' was 'interrupted' and couldn't continue. So I rang HP and they made me take out the battery, unplug the power cable, and hold the power button down for 30seconds. Then I start up the laptop, and go into the Bios and run a Hard Drive and Memory test.

HP said if you get error message 302,303 or 304, the hard drive is about to die.

Well I didn't get any error message, and the test completed fine, and the computer started up like normal once rebooted (except for the date reverting back to 2008).

So this morning, I start it back up and the same freaking message appears. I get around this by repeating the steps, minus the hard drive test.

Now I want to know, is their a program that can take an exact mirror of my hard drive, so when I buy a new one, I don't need to go through and re-install everything like drivers, software and more importantly, the operating system?

Acronis will do it for you. But... You have to find out what's causing the activation message, and that's not the hard drive "dying".

Macrium Reflect has a free version that should do what you need
http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp

Do you have a large external USB drive? You'll need somewhere to store the image that's not the drive you're imaging.

After you create the disk image make sure you read up on creating a boot cd or bootable USB and the restore process.

Also agree with Maurico, do a backup then find the root cause of the issue before taking any drastic action.

A full scan with malwarebytes would be high on my list

Also run some disk drive diagnostic tools

Thanks for the replies guy.  I do have a 500gb external drive, which i've already backed up all 'My Documents' which has all the data files I want saved.

I did a Malware scan before but it didn't find anything :(   I've also done a windows update.

I posted a message on the microsoft support forum, and ran a windows diagnostic tool and posted the results.

I'll try that link you posted Ragnor and see what it has to show.

I use and always suggest shadow protect as you can boot from a cd and do a full restore or mount the image and only take what you need, also supports virtual boot to have you up and running in no time

i have used it on desktops and servers and never had a problem, it is complete hardware independent as well
