I am trying to set up Remote desktop access for windows XP/ Windows 7 and wouldn’t you know it but i have struck a problem
i have been through the process and configured my modem (Thompson TG585 V80) and set up port 3389
i have then gone to canyouseeme.org to check out whether i can see this port through the associated IP address and the response is no. i have rung Telecom to check to ensure that they haven’t blocked this port and their response was to direct me to Thompson
i thought i could have better luck here. Any assistance/ Ideas would be greatly appreciated

Opened the port on the firewall on the local machine?

Any reason why you're not just using TeamViewer?

My experience is that it 'just works'.

Sorry if suggesting an alternative is a bit OT.

Logmein. No firewall configuration, no port forwarding needed.

I don't have an answer either, but since TeamViewer and LogMeIn have been mentioned, thought I might as well let you know about Join.me as well.

Join.me is from the same Logmein crowd. The difference is one is full remote access (Logmein), the other is a desktop sharing good for demos, conference calls (join.me).

I'll add a vote for Logmein. Works well for me.

So you have the port forwarded to your correct machine(because it has a static local ip) in your router and have set it to allow the access on your win xp machine and had it auto configure windows firewall?

You also have configured a user account to have remote access priveleges?

Try typing in the winxp machines' terminal: netstat
perhaps with a -l switch(or something similar see /?) to figure out if the machine is listening correctly for the rdp connection.

There's no reason to install these other software if you already have a remote access system that you are used to and can diagnose the problems to get it working correctly. But if yuo can't(or just can't be bothered) I'd also recommend team viewer which I've used many times providing remote support for friends and family.
