Right click on the volume control in the task bar, select 'Playback devices' causes a run dll error.

Choose the applet from the control panel gives a same sort of issue.

Any pointers on how to fix this problem?

I just added a set of logitech cordless headphones to the wifes machine and she wants to flick back to her speakers.

Unplug the headphones and try again.
Sounds like a corrupt driver.

Yip, did that.  The headphones are fine, we just can't get back to the sound device applet.

Bummer. Restarted computer, run Windows Update? Visited the manufacturer's website to download their own driver?
