I am currently testing out free proxy which you can set differnet access levels based on Windows Domain User Groups, but it is a bit buggy so I am still looking for alternitives, I have been playing around with ubuntu server so a linux alt that runs on it may in be for the taking.

Squid will do that. We have Watch Dog filtering our internet at Northcote College as well then we have our internal Squid proxy which is configured to auth against our Active Directory domain and give access depending on group membership.
