Hey,

I?ve been given the job of setting up a proxy server for a network that needs to have a banned word list (e.g porn etc)

I tried to install dans guardian on a ubuntu server VMware box but My little knowledge in Linux got me nowhere, So I was wondering if there is a distro of linux that is pre setup for being a proxy server?, If not is there a free windows alternative that does the same job?

Cheers Andrew

hmm trying to think of what you want to achieve here, other than blocking certain sites. There are things you can do on IE (depending on local permissions etc) to content filter. Without knowing what is the network running etc etc can't really help much sorry.

take a look for squidgaurd.

most linux proxys are bassed on squid well at least the most comonly used ones, chances are you will find a prebuild vmware image on vmware.com. squid gaurd has auto updates for sites and there already pre classified.

thats where I would go however im a linux user. Tho if you find the right one you should be able to configure it via a web interface. or at the very least intsall webmin *shudder* and use its web interface to configure all the aspects of linux you want.

Squid Proxy with DansGuardian Content filtering sounds ok and realy easy to get going. you will need to set a manual ip or have your DHCP server give it the same IP each time. so you will need to find out how to log into the vm and to change the up address. You can easily find its current ip once logged in by typing "ifconfig"

I look after a school boarding house network, i have had great success in using www.opendns.com to block websites, best of all, you block adult websites for example and it blocks hundreds of thousands of websites (with several thousand more being added daily). Also allows you to add in your own custom list, i have it blocking adult websites, social networking, proxy sites (a real problem!) and quite a few more sections. Basically all you would do is point your DC to use opendns's dns server instead of your isp's and thats it!

Ubuntu server + Squid + OpenDns

There are plenty of tutorials on how to setup squid in ubuntu. Which should be fairly easy to follow without any previous linux knowlage. Also using opendns over keyword filtering will stop harmless website from accidently being blocked.

there are already filtering systems in place offered to schools through most isps so you don't really have to run your own internal filters.

Some don't tho.

Taradale High school have a system, with a web interface and everything, its linux based. Different access levels for staff/admins/students etc, uses the auth from novell, i think it could be modified to work with windows server.

Not sure if they would share tho.

At Napier Boys High School we use the free filter "Watch Dog" which our isp offer us, except the keyword filtering on it is very poor. The only way to block a site completly is via url and ip but then the students use proxy sites to bypass this with a new one poping up everyday so it's hassel to keep up with them.

The Current proxy server is running a old version of Mital but I was planing on getting rid of this server and running the internet through one of our win2k3 servers tho if needed I can keep the linux box.

I am currently testing out free proxy which you can set differnet access levels based on Windows Domain User Groups, but it is a bit buggy so I am still looking for alternitives, I have been playing around with ubuntu server so a linux alt that runs on it may in be for the taking.

Dannz: Im very doubtful that novell would share it to be modified over to windows, they have to make money aswell :P

It's not a novell product, its a custom one for taradale high. Novell had no involvment in the development.
