SirHumphreyAppleby:

Another rclone user here. It hasn't been mentioned, but rclone can also encrypt data. I presently use it with both Google Drive and OneDrive for daily backups and have simple scripts to store multiple revisions of source code and other files where a backup history may be useful.

I previously used Duplicatti, but I found rclone much easier to work with.

I use rclone with B2 and I have all my data encrypted. There was a bit of effort involved in setting it all up and deciding on the best options to use but now that it's all done and I have scripts set up I just issue a one-word command and the backups happen.

I'm currently storing 11GB, which is just over the 10GB of free storage. From 2018 when I started using B2 until today I've racked up an entire 15 cents of bills. Backblaze has my credit card details but they haven't billed me yet, I assume they're waiting until it's worthwhile for them to bill me without losing it all in CC fees.

CokemonZ:

Trying Duplaciti and B2 - took about 20 mins to setup and seems to be working like a charm.

As a new user of Unraid (thanks fellow GZers), I too have Duplicati running on it, backing up to an external USB. Home computers also run duplicati to backup to local disk and then use syncthing to Unraid server.

I have also been experimenting with AWS S3 and Duplicati which is working well, but will give B2 ago considering costs like mentioned above.

Thanks for the Rclone tips - have the add-on installed and will take a look.

Since this is a recent-ish discussion and it looks like there are a few NZ Backblaze users here, I will be cheeky and tag on to this...

I am going through the motions of setting up rclone on Unraid for encrypted backup to Backblaze, but I have hit a snag at literally the first step: BackBlaze isn't able to verify my phone number because I am never receiving the verification SMS!

I've tried to go through the process a number of times, and with both a 2degrees and Vodafone number, but no dice... contacting support ended up in a palm-off:

Good afternoon, and thanks much for your follow-up.

We have had customers from New Zealand experience issues with getting our SMS codes even though we use two different providers to send out the codes.
I would suggest using a different number or creating a new number (not with a New Zealand code) expressly for this purpose.

In the meantime, I would recommend contacting your phone carrier to see if there's anything they can help resolve. I'm very sorry about that.

Did any of you folks with Backblaze have these issues?

I don't recall having any problems getting verified with my Vodafone number, but then I did sign up with Back Blaze in 2018 so things may have changed since then.

Thanks for the feedback @MurrayM. I ended up picking up a Skinny SIM to try, and it worked first time. Guess Spark/Skinny are ok then!

I've also seen options for using BorgBackup in conjunction with rclone, has anyone tried this?

Another Duplicati user here! But this time with OneDrive and Google Coldline. Backblaze B2 looks like an interesting product, will investigate that further.

Just following up to my previous question in case it helps someone: I actually ended up using the Borgmatic docker, which is working great and much cleaner than the Borg plugin route. Highly recommend it, since it encapsulates all of the declarative config and crontab in one place with no need for scripting it.

The only hitch is the cloud shipping of my backups, since Borg only supports SSH connections to remotes. I had originally planned to use rclone to ship the encrypted Borg repo to Backblaze, and while I made it work, it involves a bit of synchronization between the Borgmatic container and rclone commands, which I'm not crazy about having dependencies outside of the container. As a general side-note, I also wasn't sure exactly whether it was safe to send the whole Borg repo (cache and all which appears unencrypted), or just the chunked data files. No guide I found was specific in that regard.

I came across a a plucky little provider called BorgBase.com, which essentially looks like a VPS running Borg and would allow everything to be managed by the Borgmatic container, as well as adding a few cool reporting and alerting features. But I will admit to a bit of paranoia about a relatively unknown provider... the data is encrypted client-side though, for whatever that is worth... you can also choose between European (Hetzner) and North American (???) hosting options as well.
