I have 1 program that will not run under Wine since it depends on Microsoft .NET SP3 - my solution to that is to run Virtualbox as a service and login to a Windows VM over RDC - works well for my needs and doesn't hog my computer.

It's possibly overkill running Server 2003 for 1 app, but ah well, my computer has the resources for it.

any NZ download link?

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

The Auckland linux download server popped online today too, so it's whatever the ubuntu site gives you.

If your in the south island possibly ftp://linux.citylink.co.nz is your best bet, otherwise the North Island would be the Auckland Server http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-releases/

I loaded it on a spare laptop a few days ago and I have to say I am very impressed, it all loaded rather easily.  Going to use it as my corporate laptop since my employer "supports" / tolerates Linux on the desktop.
Still haven't got Evolution working with the Exchange-MAPI the way I want it to allow me to get my work e-mail, but that's a work in progress.
But everything else went very very smoothly.  Got NVidia setup easily, Compiz (yay for the cube, which is great eye candy!!), dual screens, Corporate VPN, Pidgin with Outlook Communicator Plugin.  And my Dell D630 boots to the login screen in about 15 seconds, takes about 3-5 seconds to login to having Firefox up and running.  XP had been getting very slow since it's been running for the last 18 months, takes about 6 mins to boot.  Very very quick.
If anyone has found any recent packages for Evolution for 10.10.. That would be nice ;)

I am going to give it a try. Been using 10.04 for the last couple of months for the first time and have been impressed when I use Google chrome web browser how quick it is to load up on my screen

I have had Evolution working no problems with Exchange 2003 / 2008 - as long as Microsoft Outlook Web Access is enabled it will be fine.

If you like the eyecandy (for anyone out there) run this:

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

This will give you a extra option under Preferences where you can turn on other bits of the eye-candy. I prefer using Desktop Wall instead of the 3D cube as it makes it faster when switching between desktops, and gives you that OSX feel to things (if you are into that)

Give it a go, if you are impressed with speed in this, and also know your way around the command line to a good degree you will definitely love the speed that straight Debian offers.

For those out there that don't know already, Ubuntu is Debian with extra packages and customizations.
Ubuntu is also built off the SID (Unstable) version of Debian, which means in some cases it can be less reliable than straight vanilla Debian.

Going from Ubuntu to Debian if you know your way around Linux is a good step to take, not only does it allow you to build up to your ideal OS, but also runs faster, has less "bloat" and in most cases can be more stable.

For those wanting to give this a go, I recommend either going for Lenny 32bit or Squeeze 32bit, you could go for 64bit if you have more than 4gb of ram, but in most cases this is really not needed.

Would normally do that however my offices OWA is "special" due to the client SSL Cert on a hardware key required to login so there is very little chance of using it without hacking the Evo client.

Yep, already done that, I personally prefer the cube as it's a nice look when you swing the windows around.

aim: Yeah I've been free of Windows as my main OS for about 3 years now. I do dualboot on my laptop and desktop - but my laptop was linux only for a long time.

I had to have it installed now though because my degree requires lots of solidworks and matlab work. Neither has a suitable (and compatible) linux replacement.

Of course it's on my desktop for the odd game, matlab and solidworks, I also usually write my reports in windows as office 2007 is quite stable enough in wine for my liking, and Open Office doesn't do equations. Which is a must for lab reports.

So that's the reason I cannot be Windows free. Unfortunately I likely never will be copletely. Such is the nature of my work.

I can't believe you just said...OOo doesn't do equations.....WTF. I typed up all my 2nd year physics notes in OOo, they were beautiful the equations worked out perfectly. The fact that it is a basic scripting language to get the equations means that you can type out what you want to get select the lines and press the convert button (I mapped this to F4 so I could do it quickly on the fly). The graphical interface of office math type is absolute crap for doing anything other then a basic equation.

Solidworks/gaming is the only reason that I still have a windows box.

I have 10.10 UNE on my HP Mini.....overall the unity desktop kinda looks cool but it slows down my netbook too much for my liking. I will be "downgrading" to 10.04 when time permits.

The fact that the unity bar on the left side of the screen takes up valuable real estate on the 1024*600 screen so that many websites need to be scrolled sideways really annoys me.

Although one really cool thing happened, I chose to upgrade my install rather then do a full reinstall. I left it going while I went to work, the computer had lost power sometime in there, the install was about 1/2 done. There were a few missing components to the OS, mainly gnome was not installed properly so I could only see one program running. ALT-Tab wasn't working. No networking on the wireless but wired was working fine. So I simply did a sudo dpkg --configure -a and about 1 1/2 hrs later all was up and running. I was surprised at how resilient the system was to not require major surgery after something like that.

semigeek: ...My wireless adapter wont connect, even though it shows a full signal. After about 30 seconds it just says wireless disconnected or similar. It was working fine in 10.04

Same problem here. Dell Vostro 1200 with Intel 4965AGN wireless - 5GHz n not working in 10.10, was in 10.04; g OK. HP Mini 5102 w. Broadcom 43224AG wireless 5GHz n OK w. STA driver.
