G'day..

It's that time again

.

Seeing as I've broken myself free of Apple (iPhone binned, just got an Android S3), after breaking myself free of MS (Other than a freakishly fast gaming rig I made), I want to install Linux on a partition or on another drive (Don't mind) and have a crack at a few things.

I used to muck around with Suse years and years ago, but see Ubuntu is now popular...but what about Linux Mint?

Don't want hardcore yet...so where to start?

I like Ubuntu and its new unity interface, but if you want a look closer to the old gnome shell, Mint is good. I way prefer Ubuntu with the exception of the odd bug where the side panel refuses to hide now in the LTS release.

Try Arch Linux... it's far from too hardcore but will hold your hand to a better understanding of how linux works.

Best aspect of Arch it it's a rolling distribution - meaning you're never out of date and don't need to wait for the next point release (e.g. Ubuntu 12.10) for major updates.

Ok, well so far it has sucked big time.

I grabbed Mint Maya 13..tried to install that and got black screened no matter what I tried (DVD, USB blar blar) Got to the install screen then black.

So I grabbed 12.04 Ubuntu and tried the same, but this time added in the Windows install option along with all the others...same same

Whats up with the video drivers to get his going? You'd think it would be simple enough.

The I go onto both sites forums and they're LOADED with ISSUES on fresh installs of both of the latest versions OMG.

So, any suggestions...Other thing is I guess since the machinery has gotten a lot quicker and weirder over the years (HArddrives included), Linux doesn't seem as happy, am I wrong?

Yeah, was just over there a sec ago..not sure...I used Suse about 7 years ago, actually owned a paid copy of it, but by the looks of it, they've gone enterprise really, which was actually where they were headed back then.

Seems odd to be having issues trying to do a fresh install on a fresh partition...need someone to actually sit with me through it I think..This PC I have is a rocket but it is temperamental.

BTW, can you install on NTFS partition or does it have to be FAT32?
