I finally got around to giving Unity a decent go (i.e. Ubuntu 12.10), and wow. It's terrible.

I gave it 24 hours of sole use, and I just couldn't gel with it. I had been using the last Gnome release of Ubuntu.

So I decided to start looking around, and despite looking far and wide, I seem to have landed not too far away from where I started, with XFCE (Xubuntu 12.10).

I am loving its simplicity and light weight. I have decent hardware, so lightweight wasn't a priority, but XFCE does what it says on the tin, and is certainly a truckload prettier and smoother than it was years ago.

Early on (RH 3.x etc) I really liked Kubuntu, maybe because it was an easier transition between that and Windows 95/98. Gnome had been my go to in recent years.

So, Linux lovers, what say you. What are you running now in the way of a DE, and what do you like about it.

Hi Tony,

Have a look at Zorin (http://zorin-os.com/). It is not unity, really fast and solid. I am stillon Zorin 5, although Zorin 6 is out and getting good reviews.

I'm using Kubuntu on a spare machine, I chose Kubuntu because Ubuntu never worked properly. And it's been stable so far.

Gnome 3, on Debian, on my PC at work (dualhead), my netbook, and my PC at home. I quite like it. I spend most of my time in a web browser or a terminal.

Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon desktop.

Cinnamon is still developing and not perfect yet, but it has made great progress, is very actively developed and the developers listen to the community.

It's basically a new (better?) surface on top of Gnome 3, giving you a conventional desktop experience based on top of modern infrastructure. A good idea.

Stock Xubuntu on my netbook. Super lightweight and very fast. Ubuntu 12.04 with unity on a vm on my desktop. I like unity, feels very different to anything else and works well. I have never got why people hate it so much. Only reason it is not on the netbook is because it would be a bit slow and the sidebar no longer hides intelligently. Not a problem on a 23 inch monitor, but a big problem on a dinky netbook display.

And...Ahem...windows 7... it is the only one that passes the WAF test

KDE 4.9.3 on Opensuse 12.2

Since about KDE 4.4 it really has been the best of the linux desktop environments (in my opinion) and Opensuse has always had the best KDE integration of any of the distros by a long shot.

Home: Xfce spin of Fedora. Swiched to Xfce when main Fedora release went to Gnome 3. Found Xfce to be simple, fast, and easy to tweak to my preferences - I like to have just one panel, and have it vertical down left side of screen so the full monitor height is available while keeping the panel visible.

Work: mostly Gnome 2 on RHEL 6.

I guess that I am weird because I like and use unity. IMHO it is the direction Ubuntu should be going.

Day to day is Gnome 3 on Fedora 17

After a week or two I've found Gnome 3 more usable than Gnome 2, although there are a couple of things still missing.

KDE i gave up on a long time ago.

XFCE and LXDE are great lightweight environments for older hardware.

My wife has mostly been using Ubuntu but hates Unity, and is now trying out Gnome 3.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Gnome 2 on Debian stable. Nice easy install and everything works

Did try Linux Mint with Cinnamon.. was impressed by a lot of things about it but still a bit buggy sadly... might check out Mint 14 when it comes along
