newbie here trying to get my head around linux .. love the idea of it all. using ubuntu 6.06 (dapper drake) with live cd as it supports the persist mode allowing me to save settings to my usb stick. great idea!  where i have got stuck is getting my internet to work. I have woosh and use ethernet cable direct to woosh modem (no router). I have found instructions for the warty hog ubunto version but that did not work.  There is no apt-get install pppoe for my version either (or is there?)Anybody have any glues as to where to look?  cheers

You want the pppoe package which is in the universe repository (which in turn is not enabled by default in ubuntu).

The best place to see what is available in the official repositories is searching at http://packages.ubuntu.com - which ptoduced this:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=pppoe&searchon=names&subword=1&version=dapper&release=all

By the way you really should upgrade to feisty :-)
