I have installed ubuntu on my other, older computer, after Windows XP had failed to install itself. Technical support said that there is some h/w failure, and I better upgrade my h/w.

I was so happy to find out that ubuntu was installed flawlessly.

I'm trying to connect this computer to the internet with WLAN.

ubuntu had recognized my USB wireless dongle, and I have configured it through the GUI. But still the computer does not connect.

What should I do connect it?

there is a tool called Automatix
if you are using Ubuntu older than 7.04 (Feisty) try using it to install "Network Manager"
what is the USB WiFi make & model?

barf,
Thank you for your answer. I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty, an Edimax BR-6216MG router, and an Edimax Turbo wireless USB dongle.
I have a connection to the internet now only through a computer that runs Windows, so I can't d/l enything to my ubuntu machine. I don't know what to do.

I assume it detects your WLAN network - check in Network Manager icon in the notification area.

Do you have MAC filtering enabled? Does your WLAN network use encryption (WPA or WEP)? If so try turning it off and see if you can then connect. Do you know the chipset in the WLAN dongle?

I'm using Edimax EW-7318Ug USB adapter. The router does not enable any filters and no encryption. I don't know how to find out what my chipset is.
