I have a Gigabyte GA-A75M-D2H motherboard (with Radeon HD 6550D onboard graphics) that is currently running a Samsung 1920x1200 monitor (DVI and HDMI inputs).
OS is debian Jessie with the Trinity (TDE) desktop.
And I now have an AOC U2868 PQU 4k monitor (DVI, HDMI and DP inputs)!
But to run it I need a new graphics card. I don't do gaming, or watch much video - I want it mainly for text editing.
In fact I'd like to run both monitors.
Any recommendations/hints/tips for a (preferably quiet) graphics card?

Nvidia GTX 960 would be the best bet for you, if $350ish is too much, then look at the 750Ti which is around $230

Interesting. I had assumed that since I would be running two monitors, the motherboard graphics could do one and the new card would drive the new monitor.
Would the AMD and nVidia graphics play ok together? I had imagined I would be getting an AMD-based card.

It will work fine, and you will run both displays off the graphics card, which all come with many display outs.  Your motherboard needs a PCI-E 16X slot of course and enough room for a double slot card.

You can investigate AMD but I feel more confident recommending you Nvidia due to better drivers and support

Something like the GTX960 supports up to 4 displays, so I'd go with run. Run the 4k display off DisplayPort and the weird old monitor off HDMI.

For future reference, AMD cards play nicer with Linux IMHO.
