Hi all

SWMBO is a linux user, we are on a capped data plan and we want to track how much of the cap she is using as she doesn't seem to believe she is using as much as she is (all the other machines Windows and android have traffic monitoring on them), so something that

a) has a graphical interface
b) Is set and forget

I am a bit baffled as i had assumed there was an inbuilt thingie to tell me this, but i can't find anything.

And when i went searching on the Ubuntu sites, most of the tools I found were command line/ terminal based which aren't much use as she never remembers the commands.

Thanks

vnstat would be my goto too, in my experience, its actually the most accurate too. Gives you the option of the builtin vnstati tool for producing graphs, PHPVnstat and JSVnstat are also decent alternatives.

i run vnstat and bandwithd ontop of routers default built in tools for monitoring.

it is worth asking though, why not look at unlimited or a higher cap...

also considered mobile devices? my personal phone averages 100GB+ a month alone - thats Twitch, Youtube, Vessel and dropbox prominently.

ofcourse there is the dirty simply using ifconfg

l:~$ ifconfig
eth11 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:
inet addr: Bcast: Mask:
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:2943314330 errors:0 dropped:6322 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1833249228 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:1427034397692 (1.4 TB) TX bytes:4820885580919 (4.8 TB)

But thats only useful up to the state reset of the tracker on the nic, Much the same as windows.
