I have a RP3 running the latest Rasbian and the temperature when idle is too high (temp=55.8'C) with no case and does have heat sinks. Apparently is should be around the ~40'C mark, when idle

When I run Chromium the CPU is avg. 70% with temp. 71.4'C

When I run Midori the CPU is avg. 30% with a temperature 62.3'C

I guess my question is, "why is the CPU utilization so high for both browsers?".

If i try and play a youTube video in Chromium I'll soon get a OSD thermometer in the top right hand corner and I believe that the Pi will throttle back CPU clock. Also the thermometer is only displayed when the temp. gets to about 80'C+.

I know RP3 get hot, but it's starting to be an unsuitable product.

I've got 6 Pi's in a little cluster and I get a range of Idle temperatures however when filly loaded yes the temp goes right up to 80c then throttling kicks in.

I have a fan blowing air across the Pi's and this reduced the temp to about 60c when fully loaded, you need decent heat sinks.

Yeah, the idea of using them without a heatsink is a joke.

No idea why the browsers are so bad on them either. I got about 5 fps playing a 1080 youtube on it, then it thermomotered and dropped to about 1 or 2 fps.

Little heatsink didnt do much, but a larger one seemed to let it not get the thermometer. Still performs like a piece of crap in browsers tho. I might try a newer raspbian and see if that helps it out at all.

I got a cheap 30x30mm 5v fan off eBay and cut a hole in the acrylic case to mount the the new fan. Just doing that I got the temperature down to ~44°C from ~70°C.

I am waiting for a better/bigger heat sinks.

I've just got copper heats sinks on mine and they work well. If you want something that for starters performs better than a Pi and also has an excellent heat sink take a look at the oDroids from Here. They're around the same price as the Pi but with double the ram and I find the temperature stays quite low on them with a small fan on heavy loads.
