I don't think it's a wifi issue.

he has the USB wifi gadget in, and it picked up the printer part and installed jsut fine.

It's an all-in-one printer/scanner.

He had also done this on the laptop, using it's built in wifi, both drivers installed and work just finr.

Same scanner driver, but on running the install.sh it says no scanners found?  But it found the printer the same way...

So how to troubleshoot this?  I know nothing about wifi on Linux (being new also), I don't know if it's the scanner driver or what...I would have though it would ask, USB or wifi, but it didn't.

(BTW this person is my relative)

He is running Mint Cinnamon Sylvia on both laptop and desktop. The issue is with the scanner on desktop.

I've combined both the threads and updated the title.

Im confused.

So you have a wifi adapter which works to the internet and you can print successfully to your scanner/printer.

So the problem is getting scanner side of things to work wireless ?

And you want help getting the scanner functionality ?

What happens if you plug the mint machine into the scanner directly? ie does simple scan app when connected to machine physically ?

no app is detected on my desktop PC it  says  no scanner detected and if i hit update  or search for scanner it searches then says  it not on scan mode or try to plug cable in to use  scan mode.

very strange, yet in my laptop it works with the open window to  do the scan etc

i will try the cable plugged in see if that wil find my printer scaner

mine is canon mx726  mulitiprint/scan/copy

I hate this sort of issue.
Using it via usb cable made no difference.

I got him to do chown $USER:$USER -R /home/$USER
And add himself to scanner group.
WHich made no difference.

In the end he downloaded scangearmp via Software Manager , it is an old version 2.something.
It works but, straight after it then shows this screen.

So...not permissions. The  Driver? Still bizarre cause then why is the laptop, with SAME o/S on it happy with that newer one?

And this, I think it means stuff is missing from the linux system, what to do about it though.... any ideas?

Are you sure that was downloaded from software manager?  It seems to be in a source file folder, and it's complaining of missing libs.  Installing through package manager would pull in any required libs.  You have possibly the worst brand to deal with here (in my experience anyway!)  I stopped buying anything canon when I started using linux.

Positive.

I had no issues installing my canon with scanner.

he had no issues doing it on his laptop, just the desktop.

Take a look at this: http://tipsonubuntu.com/2016/08/14/canon-printer-driver-scangear-mp-ubuntu-16-04/

Linux Mint == Ubuntu essentially.

For the likes of the WiFi side of things mind plugging in the stick and running "sudo lshw -C network" / pasting it here?

Found the issue with scangear on my desktop it wanted the old driver to work not the new one, weird. cause it works fine on my laptop.

Stil no fix for wifi though it only uses network cable, i not know the commands for usb adapter

So it has found the Wireless dongle and has the kernel driver installed there also - you don't need to install a driver.

Honestly it should be as simple as connecting to wireless at this point. In the system tray area click on the networking icon - do any wireless networks show up?
