Over the last few months I have been checking out numerous Linux Distributions for desktop/laptop solutions. All them were useable but all of them with caveats, frustrations, paper cuts and just plain awful experiences.I have been using Linux since the 90s and have

seen a lot develop and a lot come and go. The current top half of the Distrowatch rank list (not a quality rank) all have issues that given their maturity just really shouldn’t by now.

So, I have been thinking what is the future of Linux on the desktop/laptop? Well in my humble opinion I believe the future of Linux in these applications is Chrome OS. With Android Apps and Linux Apps becoming available on Chrome OS the platform is well placed to offer a viable alternative to Windows and Mac OS. Chrome OS I feel is the best future for Android for use off the mobile phone.

I believe the biggest hindrance to the development of Linux has actual been its freedom. it has created a fragmented smorgasbord of mediocrity. There are simply too many doing their own thing. Anyone considering a move to Windows alternatives like Linux gets confronted with an overwhelming menu of Distributions all doing it differently. Chrome OS however has a central control point in Google that can provide uniformity and this appeals to the OEMS and encourages them to jump in. Users are presented with a professional working model with support and devices designed to work with the operating system out of the box.

Linux desktop of course will live on for the hobbyist, purist, professionals and Server side is a done deal.

What are your thoughts ?

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I don't have enough user experience of Linux to pass judgement on your post, but the limited experience I do have says that you are spot on. That is also the reason the experience I do have is limited.

I have a Chromebook (Samsung Chromebook Pro) and absolutely love it. I also run a couple of different distros (Solus on my Desktop, Ubuntu on my work Laptop).

Linux has come a long way especially now with Steam supporting Linux with most games.

I would love to import a Pixel Book they are great machines but I am currently evaluating a new MacBook Pro, can't have both unfortunately.

As for Ubuntu, it just saddens me these days, I can't help thinking that Canonical will either give up on it or split it off similar to what Redhat did with Fedora.

I am also lusting after a PixelBook. If google sold them here I would have already taken the plunge. The kids have $400-odd versions for school and I have been super impressed. But I want something slightly (well, substantially) higher spec and build quality. The NZ market for higher end Chromebooks seems to be lacking.

Dell has announced it is getting in the higher end Chromebook game too. Not that I particularly want a Dell (previous bad experiences).

I am not a big fan of Dell either.

I fixed a Dell for a friend many years ago. It was the poorest quality piece of junk I have ever opened up. I decided then and there I would never have one.
