So i'm on my home network. I have a desktop windows PC and Ubuntu laptop. I'm trying to connect to my windows pc with remmina from my laptop

Add my windows IP and windows login (email & password) and I keep getting an error

"Unable to establish a connection to RDP server 192.168.1.176"

My windows PC has remote access turned on.

Any experts?

Have you tried from another windows machine to see if that works?

Check if port 3389 is open between the linux laptop and windows desktop.

kiwis: Add my windows IP and windows login (email & password) and I keep getting an error

As you've mentioned "email" as username, I'm assuming you're using a microsoft account to login.

Try using this format:

username  = microsoftaccount\<microsoft account email address>
password = the microsoft account password

Well from Windows 10 I can connect to my wifes laptop (another windows).  Not sure how I check within Ubuntu, I'm brand new to it.

Correct. Mircosoft account, the one I use to login to my windows PC.

Tried FirstName LASTNAME\email@domain.com - still does not work. Not sure what you mean by "microsoftaccount" though

So on the machine you are connecting to ensure remote access is allowed, it's in advanced settings of control panel, System. Also might need to add an inbound firewall rule for tcp port 3389.

I use Remmina on ubuntu all day every day on a large range of machines and servers, works very well.

Literally use the word "microsoftaccount" followed by a backslash, then your email address.

So, "microsoftaccount\fakeemail@example.com" as the username, for example.

It might help if you separate the network connect from the login, just put the ip address in the server field and everything else blank, do you get a cert accept response or nothing, if nothing then sounds like a firewall issue, if you get the cert response and the a three field user, pwd, domain dialog box then you have comms and just need to sort creds

Good idea, just tried that with no luck so assume windows 10 machine is blocking it.

When I go

Right Click "This PC"  > Remote Settings > Remote Assistance ticked and remote Desktop ticked to allow remote connections.

What else could I do to allow connections.

I have the free AVG antivirus

Hi, ok so there is the windows firewall, this is in the control panel also, you need to create an inbound connection for TCP port 3389 although there already should be a pre rolled one for RDP access over TCP already in there and might just need enabling.

However the AVG firewall is probably wearing the pants on the firewall front, so again setup an inbound rule.

Disabled AVG and there's already a rule to allow port 3389 on TCP and UDP.

Nothings changed.

My Ubuntu laptop connects to a wifi extending which is connected to my router. My PC is connected via Ethernet to my router. Not sure if that should make any difference.

One assumes you can ping the machine.  Not sure if you have tried remoting in from your partners machine using windows remote desktop - if you can, then you’ll know things like firewall etc are set up correctly.

I believe in remmina you need to enter the ip address in the server field, just you email address in your username field and your microsod password as appropriate.

So went onto the wife's laptop (Windows 10 Pro also). Tried to remote desktop onto my machine via IP and Machine name and got an error saying PC not online or turned off etc (see image below)

These are my settings

So, is the machine domain joined?, or is it just a workgroup machine, when you login into it directly what user name do you use, is it an email or just a user
