I installed the latest Ubuntu LTS over the weekend on a sandpit Lenovo ThinkPad. Install was a breeze with no issues and the new installer is very nice.

There is a handful of new features with this drop that very much make it appealing. I have not had any issues so far. This version of Ubuntu should appeal to a lot of users.

Note, upgrade from previous LTS version was not available at the time of this post.

I did it over the weekend from 22.04 to 24.04 and I left it overnite. It failed for some reason. I did a recovery repair and all went well except I can't access the outside world but I can ping internal and external IP addresses. Running the install again. If this fails as it's only a play PC I'll do a complete reinstall.

Same as before no DNS service. In the finish I bit the Bullitt and did a complete reinstall of 24.04. Goes well now.

I'm going to take the plunge and hop from 23.04 to fedora silverblue 40.

Ill swap out my nvme first so I can go back if I have issues. Something about an atomic OS and the fact ubuntu 23.04 updates have never really worked well for me (hence why I'm still on 23.04 and not 23.10). Hoping wayland nvidia works better now.

On ubuntu if I'm connected to an external display/kb//m, I have to use x11 else its laggy, seem like low fps or something. but in laptop mode, wayland is perfect and you need wayland for the gestures.

In the process i did learn how fragile the connectors or on SSDs are. The plastic on one of them broke off when I went to take it out. Not repairable.

I was sitting having breakfast this morning and musing what to do today and decided that I would install Fedora 40 on a second sandpit laptop that I have. It turns out that Fedora 40 is a nice distro. Installation and set up was a breeze and is running excellently. This leaves me somewhat conflicted as I have a long history with Ubuntu going back to the very first Betas but Fedora i40 is very nice.

I am looking for OS options as I am moving away from Apple PCs but I am not impressed by Windows 11, Fedora may well be a contender for my new PCs.

Mmm maybe I'll have another play and install it on my old work machine which has been replaced.

I assume their have been changes since 2018 Mint which is running in an VM..

I use Ubuntu 22.04 at work and when I finally ditched Windows at home, I trialled Debian 12 at have stuck with that there.

Will be interested to upgrade the work-side (it's a VM so I can have a few goes) to 24.04.

The whole Snap thing pushed me down the Debian route and I have had no regrets on that decision.

Plain old deb packages but I have added flatpak to the mix. The snap store drives me nuts telling me there are updates, complaining that it failed to update some of them and then, after a restart, the ones that failed not appearing.

One can de-snap Ubuntu, and its derivatives, at least presently.
Doing so has been painless for me.
