I've installed Mint on an older system and it's running well. VLC plays DVDs.

VLC is so much more than a dvd player. VLC may be confusing if this machine ends up with a not so technical person.

This machine may end up being used mainly as a DVD player. Is there a simple and well maintained single purpose default full screen DVD player you can recommend? The few I've googled have warnings about being outdated.

Edit: Mint 22.2 Mate/Gnome

Kodi would probably be your best bet. That's actively maintained and can play DVDs directly if you have a drive.

On the other hand, you can buy a compact DVD player for $39 that will use a lot less power than a computer would.

I just happen to know the initial recipient has a stack of dvds and no player

Kodi looks great.

Just one problem - It did not create any file associations for dvd and is not available for selection in preferences.

smplayer. You can change interfaces to make it relatively simple (although ti already is pretty easy to use)
