I have decided to get a VPS(dv) through Mediatemple, and I am totally a newie to Linux. I know it actually bought myself a trouble, but just can't resist to 'touch' it...And I have tasted my first stumable - I couldn't open wordpress admin interface after the installation. Then I sent out a ticket, and within 24 hours I got two messages saying there was nothing wrong with it as they tested my installation, and not giving any further suggestions. I eventually get it right, but now I know that Mediatemple doesn't provide live chat is a big problem for the people like me, and through my first experience with them I found they weren't helpful. Even I put my question on the forum, I got the reply 6 hours later...
No complaints, just reality I have to spend more damn time on it...

If you buy a car you don't need to know a lot about mechanics, just need to know how to drive it. If your car breaks you need to pay a mechanic to get it fixed, or you can learn mechanics and fix it yourself.

Likewise you don't need many Linux "command line" skills to use a VPS , just be familiar with basic tools like FTP or PhpMyAdmin. You can perform most routine tasks as creating domains, ftp accounts, database, etc, using a control panel like Plesk o cpanel .

If you are willing to get your hands dirty there are many providers that offer very cheap (less than $5mo) VPS , they make excellent sandboxes :)

ha, exactly! Mt EV plesk panel is very neat and easy to go through. EV server is for the Linux masters, they have to do everything themselves to keep their hands 'dirty'. Dummies like me seem live a better life than those masters…

I actually like Mt a lot and have no regret for my decision. I know it is more expensive, but just like when you choose a car, you are expecting a bunch of qualities other than one or two functions. But yes, it is also good to swing around to find cheaper goodies as we all do hehe..

Webmin is "ok" (yes in quotes) for a few things especially if its way quicky and more simple to do it via here then editing the config manually. However I try to avoid as much as possible and if really needed only run's when I want to use it then shut it down.

Plesk on the other hand wow I have some crappy experiences with this in the past its design is way to user friendly with not much functionality.
