A non-techie friend has an L300 that needs a new OS, thanks to someone loading a pirated Win7 on to it badly. He did not know it was pirated and wants to go legal, and cheap, so I'm looking for recommendations for a newbie-friendly distro that "just works" with the L300's spec.s, as far as possible. I don't mind making a few tweaks myself, but the goal is a simple 2nd machine for basic surfing and emailing etc. All recommendations welcome, thanks!
I would suggest downloading Ubuntu 11.10 and write it to a CD or USB stick. Then you can try ubuntu by booting from the CD or USB stick. That way you can try the program out without installing it to the hard drive.

I feel that Ubuntu 11.10 is an ideal replacement to Windows for non-technical users (like me). I now prefer it as my main os. I only use Windows for the one program that I need but is un-available in linux. I can even use Draftsight CAD program as a replacement for Autocad.

I tried Mint out a couple of years ago, and agree that it is good. It seemed to be a bit slower loading than Ubuntu and I had a bit of trouble with drivers for my webcam and wifi. Never got the webcam to work. I liked the interface though.
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm a KDE fan, so I tried the live Kubuntu, and it worked a charm, no problem with the WiFi, either. Likewise with Zorin, another nice "Ubuntu in disguise". I probably would have gone with the Zorin, but its Live DVD reported that harddrive failure was imminent, and installation was not possible because of read/write errors in too many disk sectors. Curious that the Kubuntu live CD did not give me that heads up
Tried out Zorin quite impressive. Set up Me Tv using USB Hi def am Having trouble with the sound when watching Tv. (no sound) Easy to set up. Records sound and plays back fine. Anyone with any suggestions Bit of a newbie to Linux using terminal commands. Any help appreciated Thanks
