Hey guys,

My GF has a whit macbook, 2ghz, 1gb etc. etc. roughly 6 months old.

The problem:
You cannot access the internet through the mac osx preinstalled applications. Safari, Itunes media store etc. etc. I have re installed OSX but the problem still remains. I have installed firefox and can access the interent without any problems..

Anyone got any ideas on what the problem is? I do not use macs to often and have no idea where to start.

Cheers

I'd suggest creating a new user account, this is a quick way to determine if the issue is User specific, or system wide.

If the new user works correctly, then I would try creating a new Network Location under the user account with the issue.

Go Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > click on Location pop up, Edit Locations, then click the "+" button to add a new location.

Edit...
If the issue is a user specific network issue, then this will have been retained even though you have reinstalled the OS.

Have you checked the proxy settings in the System Preferences. Firefox doesn't use the same settings.

When you did the re-install, did you wipe the hard drive clean during that process? (Otherwise your settings can migrate during an "upgrade")

It was just an archive / install - didnt have access to an external HDD. I will try adding a new account and see if that fixes the problem

Sounds like proxies to me. Does she use the net at uni or another location which is likely to have some extra security? Check System Prefs -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxies and make sure nothing's ticked.

Also it could be access issues in the KeyChain, I had similar issues when I setup additional users and had to spend some time sorting out access in the KeyChain on an application by application basis...

Lesson - don't give your kids access to your Mac :-)

If it is the proxy, and they were smart at setting it up. They would have made a new location. Just set the location to automatic.

System preferences --> Location.

If not just make a new location. And change between the two.
