I've got a 21.5 iMac, brought last year when they first got released.
In the last few weeks i've been hearing the HD make funny noises when the iMac is asleep, sort of like it's trying to wake up over and over again.
Have done lots of tests and research on the internet like PRam reset, hardware tests etc. The only thing that picks something up is by using 'tech tools 5' which shows i have a SMART failure.
Just talked to applecare and they said i should get it into Apple in Newmarket straight away for a check up.
For some odd reason that it's not a hardware problem, will i get charged for them to look at it?

I've heard only good things about Applecare, this is my first problem so will be interesting to get a personal experience. So far the applecare CSR was awesome, so it's looking good.

Does your Disk Utility report a SMART failure? If it does, this all but confirms a hardware fault and the drive will be replaced under warranty.
It sounds pretty likely you have a warranty repair.

However
When an AASP performs a warranty repair on behalf of Apple, they are paid for the time taken to diagnose and effect the repair.
If the issue is, for example, software only, or as a result of abuse, or is No Fault Found, the the repairer will charge to cover their time spent, as they get no reimbursement from Apple in these cases.
Software issues are never covered by warranty.

It's not a complete SMART failure, only the temperture check. I've done a back up on td machine and will take it to apple in the next few days. Will post with results.

Legally you don't even need Apple Care...

But AppleCare will cover you as long as no damage has happened to the machine.

Also, what store did you buy it from?

Brought it from harvey normans.

Dropped it off today, they are sending it to their reair shop in south auckland, i thought that newmarkey was a repair depot, if i knew they weren't i would of dropped it off to Albany as they are a lot closer to were i live.
They said 7 days turn around. I thought they would of given me a loaner but nope.

Hi there,

Sorry for the late update, i got my iMac back last week and then had to shoot overseas at last minute, got back late last night.
Apple couldn't find out what the problem was but replaced the hard drive for preventive maintenance, so far so good, have not heard anything from the hard drive while it has been sleeping.
Pretty impressed with Apple as they couldn't hear the noise i was talking about, they could of easily just said there was no problem and charge me for the labour spent on trying to find the problem.
Think i'm going to buy some Applecare, everyone talks about not needing it because we have a consumer act, but if it's this easy to get someone to look at my iMac then i'm keen to pay a little extra. Beats having arguments with Harvey Norman etc.
