gehenna: How's this a problem with OS X or the App Store?

I'm with gehenna on this one. I believe I will need a Lion installer in the near future for now so I have it backed it up. It is your responsibility to do that.

If you have not bought Lion, then there are retail USB sticks floating around that you can buy.

I think this is a somewhat related question (!).

I'd like to download Mountain Lion but have a low data cap (and low download rate, but that is another issue).

My Apple account is a US account rather than an NZ account.

If I download Mountain Lion from the app store using my US account, will the download come from local servers in NZ or from servers in the US? This affects how I am billed for data and so it is quite important to me.

Anybody happen to know?

They come from Akamai caches, so it depends on whether your ISP routes Akamai content locally or not.

There are still ISPs out there that have free national data !!!!!!?

I would say it is a high chance it will be international data.

It'll probably be a mix to be honest. Depending on how well cached it is in NZ and which server is faster to download from.

Hmm. If I went to an Apple store would they let me use their connection to download the update?! Seems quite rough that the only way to upgrade is to use over 1/3 my monthly data cap!

All (Retail Only excluding resellers etc) Apple Stores should have free WiFi that you can connect to.

Something like OSX Mountain Lion is almost certain to be fully on the Akamai caches

I have heard of a number of people that did this when Lion came out. Are you in America? If so you'll almost certainly be downloading from local servers rather than internationally.

Worth noting as I haven't seen it mentioned, it is NZD 24.99 for 10.7->10.8 and/or 10.6->10.8.

Looks like the same specs as my Macbook (except I have 4GB of RAM and 250GB HD). I will be updating at some point.

One final comment. If you can get itunes gift cards on sale you can use these to get a discount on OSX. JB Hifi had them over the weekend but I didn't have time. Any updates on availability?

10.7 has been removed from the App store as soon as 10.8 was available and 10.6 has been removed as well. i have been told to purchase copies of 10.6 you need to call AppleCare to arrange this. For NZ number is 00800 7666 7666.

Basically, if 10.8 will _install_ on the system, then it'll run it just fine, although you might want a RAM upgrade.

If it doesn't meet the minimum requirements, then you wouldn't be able to even try, as it won't let you install it on a system that can't run a full 64-bit kernel. If it's at least a Core2Duo machine, you're probably okay.

10.8 should run at roughly the same speed as 10.6 does on the same hardware, assuming it'll run at all, as it actually has a smaller memory footprint.

Also: The 10.8 installer can be used to either upgrade an existing system, or if burned to a DVD, to do a completely clean install.
