Well... I've got myself into a bind...

I've got myself a new second hand MacBook running OSX 10.6 - It's great and I love it to bits...

But - Now that OSX 10.8 is out (which I don't want to run on this machine as it won't have the grunt) they've nicely and efficiently removed any chance anyone ever had of buying OSX 10.7...

If you ask me - that's poor...

(And if I've got it all wrong, I'm sure that someone will enlighten me...)

Is your Macbook below the minimum specs for 10.8? If it is, you would probably have issues with 10.7 as well. Reviewing some of the Mac sites, the general feedback seems to be that 10.8 runs better than 10.7, so provided your Macbook is at the minimum for 10.8, its probably worth while going straight to that version anyway.

I'm not sure that it'll meet the grade... I've got a Apple MacBook 13" Intel C2D 2.0GHz 2GB DDR2 120GB - Pretty basic but does the job for me...

I'd certainly throw some more RAM at your MacBook... If it can support it, 4GB would be the minimum I'd want to run.

Hi - according to Apples specs both Lion (10.7) & Mountain Lion (10.8) have the same system requirements, and because 10.8 seems to only have improvements over Lion (ie. why just have Lion when you can go one better and have Mtn. Lion), Apple are only offering 10.8 via the app store.
You could probably find a copy of 10.7 somewhere, but it would seem that your machine is below the system requirements for it (and may have software that is not currently compatible).
I have a MacBook Pro that is just inside the system requirements, but I will remain happily on 10.6.8 for a while yet (10.8 would require purchase of a few pieces of new software and a new DSLR camera to run in tethered mode).

Oh man! This is my exact problem!

I formatted my Lion drive one day on my old blackbook, ready for a fresh install, leaving a recovery partition (to tell the truth it was a pirated version). In the install menu it logs in and verifies you have a purchased copy of the OS, when it sees you don't, it told me to log in with an account that does have the purchase, I decided to leave it for a rainy day.

That rainy day has come, and now I can't buy lion anymore! (I would have had to use my girlfriends mac to do the purchase - now I'm completely stuck)

My story is a little confusing but why would you remove the OS from the store if you just eliminated a bunch of compatibility with your new OS.

I think that I'm just going to be happy with 10.6 - I've no reason not to be happy and I'm sure that the laptop will need replacing long before that position changes any...
