Something else just crossed my mind...
Is the Macbook on the Power Adapter or Battery?
On your Mac, go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver and check those configurations. You might have Energy Saver settings defined even when you are on Power Adapter.

ok thanks - I'll try that
it's only happened since Xmas like I said but I'll see that is the pronblem
I have it on power adaptor most of the time
Where are you located, someone that lives local might be able to give you a hand. Does it just do it when the iPhone is plugged in?

I'm on Nth Shore Akld... it happens all the time - I use the macbook in the evenings and at night mainly and wife always has her phone on her and charges it up (plugs it in) when we go to bed, so no I doubt that's the problem.
I'll try a couple of things tonight see if they work....
An iPhone physically plugged to a Macbook won't make it require system logon after a while. This is absolutely unrelated.
Go into the Users and Groups option under system preferences and check whether your system is set up to log in to your machine via iCloud.
I have had to disable this option because I have found that whenever I change my iCloud password I get an endless stream of pop-up boxes from iMessage, Facetime, etc. asking me to repeatedly enter my new password. This seems to go on for several days before it eventually realises that I am actually entering my password correctly.
I'm guessing your wife may have changed her iCloud password when she set up her new iPhone?
thanks for the replies
I changed the password and checked under system preferences security and privacy and the 'require password' field was not ticked but when I came back to the macbook after about 20 mins it asked me for a password....
if I go into users and groups it has
Automatic login : wifes name
display login window as: name and password - there is no option to disable this - I don't want a login window to come up
this has got me baffled - but I'm gonna figure it out!
Will it allow you to change the automatic login to you rather than your wife? Do you share an Apple ID - if so that may be confusing it as well.

no it's her name that comes up or guest user... we have 1 apple ID and certanly don't need another!
I'm not going to remove her name or change it to mine because that won't make the problem go away
