Audacity Version 2.3.2 has issues in Catalina. If you use Audacity it would be best to hold off upgrading.

Apparently some are experiencing a worrisome bug in macOS 10.15 Catalina: Apple Mail Bugs Can Lead to Data Loss in macOS Catalina

So I will be holding off to the next minor point released

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Apple has released a Supplemental Update to macOS Catalina and is still versioned as 10.15, it is not the same as an eventual macOS 10.15.1 update.

The release notes say this update includes installation and reliability improvements, and is recommended for all users.
 
This update:
- Improves installation reliability of ‌macOS Catalina‌ on Macs with low disk space
- Fixes an issue that prevented Setup Assistant from completing during some installations
- Resolves an issue that prevents accepting iCloud Terms and Conditions when multiple ‌iCloud‌ accounts are logged in
- Improves the reliability of saving Game Center data when playing Apple Arcade games offline

I have read that a lot of people were having issues with it hanging on Setup Assistant and that a manual restart was needed to nudge things along. So it will interesting to see what the first minor update contains for which I will still wait for.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

This caused me significant problems. Who writes an OS installer and doesn't do a basic disk space check in the install script, in 2019? Anyway my bootloader updated, then the script crashed on install due to low disk space... then rebooted back to the catalina installer. Lovely infinite loop.

Even though I had backups, restoring from time machine failed spectacularly because the bootloader had been updated by that point and would not accept the restore file. The process completely trashed my hard disk, but thankfully not the restore partition.

Reverted to El Capitan before jumping to Sierra and then Catalina again. Took a few hours to reinstall everything safely, and create a new time machine backup.

So nice fresh installs, but unnecessary and unimpressive.

No complaints with macOS Catalina here, except that my Snapper recharge app doesn't work (that's a problem with Snapper really)

I went through the aggravation of partitioning my hard drive so I could put Catalina on its own chunk of land.

Catalina broke some important Apps for me , Diptrace which relies on WINE to run under OSX being the most important .

I did discover the mail issue and have lost email because of it. Nothing important but sometime I do look for info in old mail.

I am back using Mojave for a while longer

Oh, I HATE the badge showing me an "Update" is available to go to Catalina

Is there any value in doing a 'clean install'? Or upgrading from Mojave would be fine? Thanks for your thoughts and experiences.

I ALWAYS :

Parition my Hard drive

Clone my whole system to that partition using a tool like Carbon Copy Cloner

Install the update on the new partition.

This way if it ever goes sideways during the install, or if there are serious bugs (like mail deletion...sigh) or if it breaks too much software I rely on I can go back quickly and easily .

And I have, I am back using Mojave. There is nothing "must have" in Catalina that worth the aggravation of bugs and broken software. When key software works then that will be a different equation. As always, your mileage may differ.

I will be doing a complete Format and Clean Install this time as I have 6 years of flotsam & Jetsam & detritus floating around even though I have always used a Free maintenance program called Onyx from Titanium Software which is a multifunction utility that you can use to verify the structure of the system files, to run miscellaneous maintenance and cleaning tasks, to configure parameters in the Finder, Dock, Safari, and some of Apple's applications, to delete caches, to remove certain problematic folders and files, to rebuild various databases and indexes, and more.

Also all my app's, including my Brother laser printer copy & scan drivers have finally been updated to 64 bit. Brother have still not updated their Control Center app which I do not really use anyway. So clearing out all the left over 32 bit app's and starting with only 64 bit code will be a good thing.

I also run an off site grandfather backup using Carbon Copy Cloner plus continuous Time Machine.

Just make sure you right down all your licence & registration codes for those app's that need them.

Well Apple released Catalina 10.15.1 yesterday and I bit the bullet and upgraded. All went well except for MagicPrefs which I was using for its middle click functionality. Though it still works the scrolling is now very stuttery. So have abandon this once great app for a replacement app.

BetterTouchTool - It took me a little while to work my way around this rather comprehensive app but finally got it set up the way I wanted. It is a paid for app after 45 day trial for US$7.50 for 2 years or a life time cost of US$21.00.

Brother Printers still have not released their updated Control Centre though the printer/scanner does work. Logitech has not released Desktop Harmony app for Catalina either.

Overall I think Catalina is slightly snappier. Not using the system wide Dark Mode.

It took close to 2 hours to download and update. Then it took 4 hours for TimeMachine to backup the new system. I have also made a Bootable USB stick using DiskMaker, which I have always done.

And of course I have, as always, run the utility program Onyx from Titanium Software pre and post install using the appropriate versions.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I have been avoiding updating. However, I just ordered a new iMac so presumably it will ship with that on.

My reason to avoid it has been issues with the compatibility of the Olympus software I use to update firmware on my cameras.

Updated my 2018 MBP to 10.15.1 as well as my 2 hackintoshes and all working well.

On a side note I bought a faulty Early 2011 17in MBP a month or so ago and fixed it and also have Catalina 10.15.1 working really well on it also.

@Geektastic - Olympus Workspace is 64bit, and has the firmware update app built in (I've removed the standalone update app and can still run the updater from within Workspace).

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Good to know.

I'm a bit irritated that there is rumour that the stand alone updater is being discontinued as I don't really want the rest of the bloatware just to do firmware updates!
