Satechi have said they are doing a base. I had one when I had my M1 Mac Mini, it's a really nice solution. It holds an external SSD so give you a very nice way to add fast storage.

Be aware its only 10Gbs, (USB 3 speeds) not TB4/5, so its possible that the SSD you use will be throttled by the connection...

OP is coming from a fusion drive so it'll seem like voodoo how much faster it is.

How about the OWC Express 1M2 1Tb or 2Tb SSD ext Drive. Plus my existing 5Tb media drive.

Then just run everything of that except the OS

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I think you’d be very happy.

Don’t get fixated on “Mac storage” like OWC. Almost any SSD storage from a decent brand will be great.

OWC make great gear, you just don’t need it in this case.

Just like Apple there is a healthy OWC "tax" for their gear, but something as simple as one of these.. is fine....

We decided not to get another ext drive as we are already running a Seagate 5TB HDD which is setup for all our media (photo's, music & movies). So we will continue to run all else (documents , email, data etc) on the 1TB SSD inbuilt Which on our current machine only takes up 500Gb.

Our present Nov 2013 old iMac 27" will be relegated to the Master bedroom as a browser based WiFi TV set till it conks out.

All up a very interesting couple of days. If we hadn't gone ahead now, it would just be our luck the old iMac would turn turtle at the most inconvenient moment. ☠️

If Linux Server runs on it? Why not? (yes, I know the open source projects, but they are not yet stable enough for me).

Yep Happy Christmas to me as I now have a Mac mini M4 24GB + 1TB storage. Also a 34" Dell P3424WEB monitor. And wow just wow.

Hint - don't use Migration Assistant. 7 hours to migrate approx 800,000 files using Time Machine. Not including Media as that is on a separate Ext 5TB HD. You end up with so much old crap plus in my case Sequoia mail kept throwing up errors and crashing. Spent a couple of hours on phone with Apple and in the end copied over, manually, from within Time Machine, all the Data files, selective Pref files and Application Support files I wanted and then did a total erase and install. Prior to that I had made a list of all the app's I needed, downloaded the latest versions for Sequoia, a couple I had to pay a new license for the upgrade but that is OK.

PS: Mac mini's only have Thunderbolt 4/USB C, NOT USB ports. So had to get a USB to Thunderbolt adapter from Apple as all my external stuff, including Apple keyboard is USB. I plugged an USB 4 port hub into the adapter and all is good. As time goes by I will upgrade to a full Apple Bluetooth keyboard and other such peripherals that use Thunderbolt 4/USB C ports & cables.

As I have never done a total eraser install since 2007, my first Apple Mac, and only done upgrades and Migration Assistant I believe I have gained at least 3 - 4 GB of disk space, maybe more.

Now I am a very happy camper with a lean mean machine.
