You need to be logged in to the same iCloud account for that to work. If you're using a different account to your wife it won't work.

Which machine & spec did you get?

just watched a video review of the m1 pro chips and there isn't much difference between the base 8 core vs the others.

Would highly recommend Text Sniper (https://textsniper.app/). Allows you to copy any text anywhere even from a picture which is super helpful.

One of the first things I installed on moving to a Mac was "Scroll Reverser"

Mac has one shared setting for the "scroll direction" for both Mouse vs Trackpad.

I just like one 'natural' and the other not.

Oh yes forgot about that one. It is in the App store. I have had this since its early days and love it.

I don't have a macbook so I don't need the battery component but Time and Network I definitely use. It is very customisable.

Also I forgot about BetterTouchTool - https://folivora.ai/

It is a feature packed app that allows you to customize various input devices on your Mac. You can use any of the supported trigger/input types and choose from a large and always growing list of actions to automate almost any task. Actions can be chained to handle complicated things.

I use it to trigger my Magic Mouse centre click as a button to open a Browser Tab in the background as well as to control the touch and scroll areas on my mouse

Plus I have a little MenuBar app - Handy Converter for all those conversions including currency rates. It is in the App Store

Though this has been discussed in other Topics I am a fan of 1Password for all my password creation and management across all my Apple devices that it supports. https://1password.com/downloads/mac/

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Awesome machine. I'm very jelly. Which video was that?

I kind of wish they made a cheaper one with a less impressive screen. That screen seems like way overkill for my needs.

I have the mbp 15" 2018 and have just got a M1 mac mini.

As mentioned carbon copy cloner and time machine for backup's I use both all the time.

Audacity for audio editing its free

I just use the built in mail for all my email it just works for what I want.

Visual Studio code if you want to do some programming

Terminus for an ssh client, Just use the free version has everything you need.

For media playback I use Movist I tend to find it better than vlc imo

It depends on what else you use your's for.

A lot of free stuff can be good but sometimes you just have to pay if you need specific stuff.
