1024kb: If you do want MacOS back, go for an early version - Sierra, High Sierra or Mojave. They're lighter on system demand & will install on older devices.

Once you've got the earlier OS installed, update to wherever you want to be through Mac's update facility.

Do you have another Mac available? You'll need one to create a bootable USB. If you haven't got access to another Mac, then get TransMac for your Windows install - that'll do it for ya.

I *think* Balena Etcher might handle writing bootable MacOS USB drives from Windows too.

Let me know if you need links to known-good MacOS files.

OK, thanks. I'll give Mojave a go.

I've found the DMG file. https://isoriver.com/download-your-file-now/?url=https://archive.org/download/macOS_Mojave/macOS_Mojave.dmg

Agree with @1024kb's suggestion re using an earlier Mac OS(X) build, get your MBP up and running first then upgrade (within Mac OS) to whatever version you want.  And fantastic to hear that it seemed you've managed to save it.  Would be interested to hear the final outcome.

Good luck!

1024kb: Are you committed to MacOS? If not, Windows runs very well on a MacBook Pro.

Your best route for getting Mac OS back is the online recovery mode, but watch out for idiotic glitches like "server is unavailable" error because your clock is not synced. I can't remember exactly what they are right now but there's various keys that will download your original MacOS version or the latest applicable or the version you were last running.

I find it easier to keep a bootable MacOS USB drive - copied from a working Mac in recovery mode via Disk Utility, then boot into recovery on a sick Mac & simply copy the working install back again.

Hey I'm so glad that you gave my idea a punt - I was pretty confident it'd work. Maybe it's time to visit those clowns at the local Mac shop who told you that the system board was dead. They either no SFA about computers in general or they straight up lied to you in the hope of getting a fat repair bill paid.

Thanks again for your assistance. It's hard not to love the Geekzone community.

In regards to Windows, this might be the way forward, if Mojave won't work either (still downloading it).

It's already on the machine now, but someone mentioned Bootcamp, if I want WiFi.

I assume I just follow these instructions? https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT201468

I cant wait for the next update. This thread has been like a little mini-series.

Does the MacBook live to compute another day... please please let it be...

When does the next update episode air?

I believe the steps within the Apple Support page you mentioned would only work within Mac OS, we you need that to download and install the necessary Bootcamp drivers.  However @baabits mentioned in his reply earlier there is a Github repository where you could run and install Bootcamp drivers without Mac OS - https://github.com/timsutton/brigadier - I think this is what you require if you can't get into Mac OS. Worth checking it out.

@wlgspotter - Yep, I had a look at @baabits link.

Unfortunately far too complicated for my brain to understand.

But basically, as it's running Windows now, would I be able to install the WiFi drivers manually, if I download them elsewhere? Would I be missing anything else for this to be a fully functioning Windows 10 machine?

If it helps I can download the boot camp drivers for you and upload to google drive or something. Just need to know what the model is. Without the boot camp drivers pack things like brightness don’t work unfortunately :( otherwise yeah you can just grab wifi drivers online and let windows update grab what drivers it can find. Cheers

Yes, you can install the drivers manually. I've got them, I'll upload for you next.

No, you won't be missing anything - as I said, Windows runs really well on a MacBook.

I must say I'm no expert in this area, so can only go with a best guess.

To answer your question directly, if you could (and managed to) find the WiFi drivers elsewhere and install it, that should get you internet connectivity in Windows.  After completing the install you could try doing a Windows Update and see if that picks up and installs any missing drivers?

On another note, if you do manage to get WiFi working in windows, maybe give the Brigadier download and link a try as that may help you download other missing drivers.  Just visit the Github page, click on "Code" near the top of the page, and select "Download as Zip".  Then extract the contents of the downloaded zip file into a temporary folder, open a Command Prompt, change to that directory/folder, and issue the command "brigadier --install".  Seemed that this will download and install any (missing) drivers for your Mac.

Sorry I'm not expert here but hopefully this helps you in a way...?

Edit:  Opps I was a bit too slow @danepak - looks like @baabits sorted you out?

Thanks. Downloading now.

So dumb question coming up: What exactly do I do with these files (I'm still trying to install Catalina, but if it doesn't work, my aim is to use the Macbook Pro as a Windows 10 device).

So let's say that Catalina won't work. I unzip the folder that you sent to me. Can I just double-click from within Windows on my Macbook Pro? I know, probably a dumb question.

The BootCamp drivers - all of them - to suit your MacBook Pro are here: https://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1721/en_US/BootCamp5.1.5640.zip The download is just under 900mb because it includes drivers for all Macs, so has a variety of hardware to consider. Just run the BootCamp installer & it'll automatically select the correct drivers for your hardware.

You'll also get a little taskbar utility that allows you to set a right-click option with your trackpad - very useful.
