iMac 5,1 approx 2007.

I tried to plug some speakers in for the first time yesterday, but the standard 3.5mm plug does not want to go all the way in to the socket, and no sound from the socket like that either.

Are the mic and headphone sockets standard 3.5mm stereo or did Apple use something slightly different there?

or is something not quite right?

Exact model: http://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.0-17-inch-specs.html

They should be totally standard, I don't think any iMacs have had odd headphone jacks,

Cheers,
Joseph

Edit...
Sorry, they have the apple standard analog/optical combo minijack. Should still work with standard 3.5mm plug tho.

Thanks. I can see someone had the case apart at some point, and the reassembly was a horrible job, there are slight bulges here and there. Maybe it is something to do with that. Both the mic and headphone sockets have the same problem, which seems unusual to me. I'm working myself up to have a closer look..

Oh you can can also check in System Preferences > Sound > Output, to see whether the OS detects when something plugs in.
Sounds more likely to be a mechanical alignment issue tho.

Cheers,
Joseph
